The 2008 Innovation Awards

Posted by Philip Joyner

After coming back to the office on Monday morning, all I could say was, “WOW!!!” The Creative Coast Alliance really knows how to throw an awards show! Unless you’re talking about the Oscars or the Academy Awards, award ceremonies fall among the list of events that most dread attending (not as bad as  visiting family members you don’t know, though less anticipated than a company picnic). Unless you’ve been nominated to win something, all you can hear is your brain saying: “Oookay buddy… just read through the award winners so we can all get out of here.”

What’s A Designer To Do?

Posted by Philip Joyner

As we’ve come to recognize our usurpatory behavior, more and more talks develop about how we can save the planet from extinction. The problem at times seems so insurmountable though. It can feel like no matter what methods are implemented in our daily lives, they wouldn’t even put a dent in the problem. Recycle! Use earth friendly cleaning products! Change all the bulbs in your house to the swirly looking ones (but not until the incandescent bulb blows first)! These may sound like really simple solutions to a ginormous problem. But the truth is, when done collectively they most definitely diminish our impact on the Earth and its resources.

We’re now of One Accord

Posted by Andrew Davies

As part of our ongoing climb up Mt. Sustainable we’ve adopted the Designer’s Accord. This community of sustainable minded designers and innovators that are trying to accomplish the incredible, but necessary, goal of changing the way designers go about their business. You can read more about the Accord and what it means to be an adopter on the website, but more importantly join the online community, share, learn and become active in incorporating sustainable principles into the way we do things.

Sustainability or Else: Progress Report, Week 5

Posted by Andrew Davies

About 5 weeks ago I went back to school. Online school that is. I enrolled in the class “Sustainability or Else” at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design as part of their Sustainability Design Certificate Program. So far I’ve consumed massive amounts of information, too much to go into now, but I wanted to just share one of my latest assignments on Business and Sustainability. I chose the Print industry as an example of how applying new thinking to an old system can yield more sustainable results.

There are quite a few resources available online as far as sustainable print design is concerned (some of them I’ve included on the last page of the report) so this isn’t meant to replace them, but rather to give someone new to the idea a brief starting point from which they can launch into their own research.

Here it is.
