What an Intrepid Conference Goer Should Know

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Always trying to learn from mistakes (and recovering from getting stuck in DC for a day) I had time to reflect on the last few days and here are just a few of the pearls I’ve gleaned from my recent trip to the How ‘08 conference in Boston.

1. Know Thy Limits. Don’t overload your day. You want to maximize the amount of info you get since you’re paying all that $$ after all, but remember the ADD and small attention span you normally have at work? Well it’s still there even when you’re at a special event.

2. Build in some time to explore the city you’re in, especially if it’s your 1st time in that city. Again, you spent all that $$ on airfare, why the heck not? I spent my last day in “Bahstun” roaming around the North End and soaking up the ambiance.

3. Have an exit strategy. Now I know why the front rows were so empty in most of my sessions. If you picked the right conference, more than likely they’ll have a lot of overlapping sessions that’re interesting to you. If you’re not sure if a session’s going to be worth your hour or so of precious attention, sit where you can make a inconspicuous exit and try and catch that other session that looked interesting.

Same Logo?

SameLogo.jpg

On vacation in Vegas this Christmas I spotted this sign (a) at a CVS near our hotel which bears a striking resemblance to the Battery Plus logo (b). Both of them are national brands so the questions I have are…

  • Is this just a case of great minds think alike?
  • Could this be a simple cautionary tale of the dangers of using stock vector art?
  • Which came first?

A Lil’ Post Xmas Recycling

Xmas_Ornaments.jpg

Christmas is usually a time of traditions, and none more wasteful than the annual post-Christmas throwing away of the Christmas cards. This year, in line with the our efforts to be a more sustainable family, my wife came up with a brilliantly simple replacement for that tradition. She made these Christmas ornaments out of the Christmas cards we got last year.

So instead of dis-carding try re-carding…

God Bless Horatio Caine

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Around here, we have a deep and abiding love/respect/admiration for the TV show CSI:Miami, not because of the action, crime solving techniques or orangey-blue glow of every scene, but because of the sweet genius that is every word that falls from the lips of David Caruso’s character, Horatio Caine.

Horatio is a man, nay a legend, who can take an situation and sum it up in one sentence while putting on his sun-glasses and exiting stage right. He has also been know to strike some fantastic poses that I am embarrassed to admit, we’ve intentionally emulated around the office from time to time. We’ve considered collecting this man’s pearls of wisdom and editing them together ourselves, however we came across this video on YouTube posted by stewmurray47.

Behold “CSI Miami - Endless Caruso One Liners”

Oh…and in case you needed one more hit, there is also this jewel posted by jhohcable; “David Caruso parks his car”. I swear this happens to me every single morning…
