Free Font Friday: LOT

Posted by James Donaldson

I have been trying to keep from putting up overly stylized fonts, just because they can be more difficult to use [correctly].  But I couldn’t help myself when I saw this one.  Lot comes to us from FontFabric and really brings a bold style and some amazing lettering (the “Q” is my favorite).  Check it out.  And if you want to see more, you can find it on the Behance Network as well.

LOT free font is applicable for any type of graphic design – web, print, motion graphics etc and perfect for t-shirts and other items like logos, pictograms.

Free Font Friday: ECOFONT

Appealing ideas are often simple: how much of a letter can be removed while maintaining readability? After extensive testing with all kinds of shapes, the best results were achieved using small circles. After lots of late hours (and coffee) this resulted in a green font that uses up to 20% less ink. Free to download, free to use.

The Iso50 Field Guide to Color Management

Posted by James Donaldson

iso50_banner_color

I am always brushing up on my technical knowledge of the printing process and color management, so I obviously have found this little field guide to be most helpful. Alex Cornell and Scott Hansen of ISO50 have put together an impressive and definitive Field Guide to Color Management.

Though there are literally thousands of guides on the web like this, ISO50’s is not only replete covering everything from lighting to print settings but also comes from a trusted resource plenty experienced with color management and printing.

Consider this advice for workspace color management:

An additional step you can take to ensure ideal lighting conditions in your workspace is to paint the walls with Munsell 8 Gray. This paint is specially formulated to have a flat spectral response with no color bias. Unlike other hues, this type of gray will not affect your perception of other colors in the spectrum. It creates a “pure” and neutral viewing environment. You may have noticed this color on the wall of photo studios and print shops.

Common misperceptions about RGB and CMYK are cleared up:

Illogical as it may sound, when working at home, you want to send your printer (which is a CMYK device) RGB images to print. The conversion occurs within the printer and the software addresses the printer as an RGB device. This is where — at least amongst the student population — much confusion is generated. Given the fact that the printer is technically producing CMYK output, it sounds like the logical mode to use is CMYK. This is not the case. Not only is the printer designed to receive RGB output from the software, but you would also be shortchanging yourself of certain colors that both RGB and the device can address that are outside the gamut of the CMYK color mode (within the software).

Calibration, color space, and color profile management are also covered. The guide concludes with specific instructions for printing Photoshop artwork on a local printer.

Hats off to Alex and Scott for covering the topic extensively and authoritatively.

Featured / Scott Hansen and ISO50

I have always loved and respected artists that can excel in more than one creative field.  To me it seems to prove that one’s creativity has no bounds, and that it is more than just learned mechanical processes (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity).  Scott Hansen is an artist and musician that I have followed for years (although only recently on twitter), and his distinct style has always been an amazing mix of the old and new.  And now, in honor of the release of his newest album Tycho / Coastal Break, he has created some truly breathtaking pieces.  Below are some samples of his work, including some glimpses into the new album, but if you really want the full experience, you should check out his site.  Check them out on iTunes for some perfect design music.

What Would a Designed American Future Look Like?

Posted by Andrew Davies

ndesignpolicy

We got wind of this Initiative via our friendly neighborhood futurist @Frank and The Pop Tech Blog. It has to do with a movement to promote a National Design Policy for America.

This policy is comprised of 10 main proposals:

“Proposal 01 Formalize an American Design Council to partner with the U.S. Government.

Proposal 02 Set guidelines for legibility, literacy, and accessibility for all government communications.

Proposal 03 Target 2030 for carbon neutral buildings.

Proposal 04 Create an Assistant Secretary for Design and Innovation position within the Department of Commerce to promote design.

Proposal 05 Expand national grants to support interdisciplinary community design assistance programs based on human-centered design principles.

Proposal 06 Commission a report to measure and document design’s contribution to the U.S. economy.

Proposal 07 Revive the Presidential Design Awards to be held every year and use triple bottom-line criteria (economic, social, and environmental benefit) for evaluation.

Proposal 08 Establish national grants for basic design research.

Proposal 09 Modify the patent process to reflect the types of intellectual property created by designers.

Proposal 10 Encourage direct government investment in design innovation.”

A major component of this initiative is a call for videos of you speaking about your views on design’s role in America’s future, not just in terms of our own industry, but as a contributing factor in economic recovery and governance. These videos will be compiled and…

“Select videos will be included in our Design CEO’s videos communicating the same message to be presented at national design conferences, to government officials, and other promotional venues.”

For designers out there interested in literally getting your voice heard, this is a remarkable opportunity. Last time I checked there were only 3 videos up there and the deadline’s April 15th.

Upload your YouTube videos here or visit their facebook page here. Make sure and read their Art Direction and Script tips before starting.

Racial Sensitivity in Paper Promotion? aka Why Context Matters

Posted by Andrew Davies

whites

I’m such a paper reusing freak that I’m  just getting around to breaking out one of the promotional notepads I got at last year’s How Conference in Bahstun.

So I’m in a meeting with one of our client-partners using said notepad and they exclaim, “what the h@$#ck does that mean?” pointing to the aforementioned notepad. I  look down and read what you see above. I initially didn’t see anything wrong with this. But you have to understand the context in which I was first introduced to it. This was a paper mill’s promo item, given to me along with a whole bunch of other stuff, branded to the hilt and accompanied by supporting messaging. So “Whites for all occasions” seemed like a way to refer to the range of white paper offerings…right?

Seeing it through our client’s eyes though… it definitely has other connotations. Now the client we were meeting with isn’t the type to be easily offended, so there was no harm done, and since then I’ve shown it to a few other people who thought it was hilarious. But the incident made me think… suppose we were meeting with another kind of client, one who didn’t know us as well, or maybe was more sensitive about these things than we are? I have to admit that if I was looking at the statement without knowing the context, it might raise my eyebrow… but what do you think?

Corporate Identity Kung-Fu

Posted by Angel Ratcliffe

We kick corporate identity butt! Well, American Corporate Identity thinks so. We received our certificates from ACI, an organization known for their esteemed showcase of the best corporate ID in the US. They sent a letter saying we won, but these bad boys officially acknowledge Paragon Design Group as a “distinguished winner” in their 24th annual competition. The category of Trademarks and Logo’s is where we scooped up three awards for logos designed for our clients Halo Model’s & Talent Group, Boot Headquarters, and Ditalia.

amcorpid_logos.jpg

Our web technique also got a “W” in the Websites category for the design of Ditalia’s site.

ACI comes out with a 320-page book highlighting the winners of this design competition in which our work will be published. It hits bookstores in November, so we’ll be looking out for our copy around then. Now if we could just sharpen our nun chuck skills, total awesomeness would be attained.
