Business Card Business

Posted by Angel Ratcliffe

I’m staring at this towering stack of 3.5 x 2 inch cards on my desk, wondering what I should do with them. My first notion is to throw them all away. I mean, I haven’t looked at many of them in a year. How often have I really contacted people from their business cards? Especially with most businesses having websites and all. They’re really just keepsakes that you hold on to indefinitely. I wonder how often I’ve been contacted from a business card, because I pass mine out like Starbrite peppermints from Grandma’s hard candy bowl.

But the thought of me desperately needing to reach someone whose contact information is not in my email address book, Google contact list, or blackberry terrifies me to no end. According to Murphy’s First Law, the law by which many of our lives are ruled from time to time, as soon as I tossed them in our “paper only” trash can an important matter would ironically pop out of no where and I wouldn’t have the contact information that was so neatly compiled on that convenient little card.

Corporate Identity Kung-Fu

Posted by Angel Ratcliffe

We kick corporate identity butt! Well, American Corporate Identity thinks so. We received our certificates from ACI, an organization known for their esteemed showcase of the best corporate ID in the US. They sent a letter saying we won, but these bad boys officially acknowledge Paragon Design Group as a “distinguished winner” in their 24th annual competition. The category of Trademarks and Logo’s is where we scooped up three awards for logos designed for our clients Halo Model’s & Talent Group, Boot Headquarters, and Ditalia.

Our web technique also got a “W” in the Websites category for the design of Ditalia’s site.

ACI comes out with a 320-page book highlighting the winners of this design competition in which our work will be published. It hits bookstores in November, so we’ll be looking out for our copy around then. Now if we could just sharpen our nun chuck skills, total awesomeness would be attained.

Ikea Teams Up With Velorbis

Posted by Susan Isaacs

ikeavelorbis.jpg

When retail giant Ikea discovered that 20% of their Danish customers were traveling to their stores via bicycle, they teamed up with bicycle company Velorbis to offer eco-friendly bike-trailers to their customers. These can be rented at the store, and since most things Ikea are flat-packed anyway, they’re perfect for hauling home purchases.

A New Tool for the Eco Conscious Designer

Posted by Andrew Davies

susdes_widget.jpg

I was just made aware that the Sustainable Graphic Design widget is now available as a free download from the Apple site. (I guess it figures that a designer’s tool is only available for the mac). Becky Green of 57 Design and Illustration, based in Queensland Australia, developed this great informational (and hopefully inspirational) tool. In her words:

“My target audience was primarily graphic designers seeking quick reference about the environmental impact of selected design and print methods, so the widget may be a little basic for members of this group, but it’s important to spread this knowledge to as many people as possible anyway.”

check it out for yourself.

A New Neighbor

Posted by Andrew Davies

Two nights ago at the Charles Landry talk, I met one of our newest neighbors. And get this… he’s Green too? I mean literally…Lawrence Green, owner of an environmentally friendly janitorial service called… you guessed it Green Sweep.

Lawrence is the one on the right

As far as I know, it’s the 1st of it’s kind in these here parts and I’m glad he picked our fair city to start his new venture.

Show him some love Savannah!

An Evening with Charles Landry: Creating a Crisis of Aspiration

Posted by Andrew Davies

landry.jpg

To say that Charles Landry is excited about city building is an understatement. He entertained and informed a standing room only crowd last night at the Trustees Gardens’ Charles H.Morris Center with stories, case studies and ideas from cities around the world. Interestingly enough for a talk on urban planning, charts, graphs, figures and statistics weren’t center stage. Instead, we were treated to a rapid-fire delivery of remarkable photos from his travels as he passionately argued for the necessity of embracing the Creative Economy.

No Rain or Thunderstorms can Stop a Party Here, especially a free one!

We’ve been having a few sever thunderstorms here over the last coupla days. But in spite of the rain, we were still able to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of our Hispanic neighbors, put on display this past weekend on River Street.

Toot, toot!

Posted by Angel Ratcliffe

That’s the sound of us blowing our own horn. These posts are usually named, “Shameless Promotion.” Well, forget that.. What’s improper about stepping back and taking a good look at the fruit of your labor? And then showing it off to everyone else? It’s kinda like when people go around showing everyone pictures of their newborn baby. Like, “Hey, look what I made!” I’m guilty of it myself.

What Any Intrepid Conference Goer Should Know

Posted by Andrew Davies

Always trying to learn from mistakes (and recovering from getting stuck in DC for a day) I had time to reflect on the last few days and here are just a few of the pearls I’ve gleaned from my recent trip to the How ‘08 conference in Boston.

1. Know Thy Limits. Don’t overload your day. You want to maximize the amount of info you get since you’re paying all that $$ after all, but remember the ADD and small attention span you normally have at work? Well it’s still there even when you’re at a special event.

2. Build in some time to explore the city you’re in, especially if it’s your 1st time in that city. Again, you spent all that $$ on airfare, why the heck not? I spent my last day in “Bahstun” roaming around the North End and soaking up the ambiance.

3. Have an exit strategy. Now I know why the front rows were so empty in most of my sessions. If you picked the right conference, more than likely they’ll have a lot of overlapping sessions that’re interesting to you. If you’re not sure if a session’s going to be worth your hour or so of precious attention, sit where you can make a inconspicuous exit and try and catch that other session that looked interesting.

How’08 Day 4

Posted by Andrew Davies

day4.jpg

Ah that familiar feeling.
The end.
It’s a weird emotional ride that How’s Editor expressed so accurately… “it feels like the end of Summer camp.” The new friends you’ve made, the shared experiences, feeling of community. You almost don’t want to leave.

But alas, all good things…
